When I first visited Croatia, I thought Split was a base for boat transfers but it’s actually really gorgeous in itself. It has a beautiful Old Town with plenty of bars and restaurants and it’s very buzzy!

It has a lovely promenade – if you walk the length of it and a little further you’ll find some steps up to a restaurant and lookout point which gives you a great view of the whole of Split.

Some of the views from the top on a cloudy day below!

There is also a flat coastal path in the same area which I would definitely recommend walking around.

We didn’t get the nicest day, but the water was stunningly clear and we went for a dip anyway!

From Split, you can also head to Krka National Park which, in my opinion, is a must see / do!

You can buy day-trip tickets from the kiosks along the waterfront in Split / you can book packages online. It’s roughly the equivalent of £50 per person.
It’s a 2 hour(ish) drive there but you stop off on the way at a pretty little Croatian town called Trogir which is on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List. It was built on the site of an ancient Greek settlement and is full of history. You get a short guided tour of it included in the price of some packages.

When you finally arrive at the national park you will be stunned. The water is crystal clear, Skradinski Buk waterfall is magnificent and you can swim right by it. The water is shallow and rocky though so as uncool and unInstagrammable as it is, I’d suggest you take some little water shoes for maximum enjoyment.
There are a couple of restaurants and food stands there and you’re given plenty of time (a few hours) to explore, swim and eat before jumping back on the coach to Split.

What to eat…
Restaurant Fife
You HAVE to go to Restaurant Fife!!! This was recommended to us by a local on the day we arrived. The fish is so fresh and it’s incredibly reasonable – 2 whole sea-bass / a mound of calamari is around 70 Kuna / £8.50. Anyone I’ve told about it has absolutely loved it!!!

2023 update – Restaurant Fife is a hell of a lot more pricey than when we went in 2014 and 2017! You’re talking EUR 18 for 1 sea-bass and chips these days. Still delicious but definitely not as wow as it used to be.

Bokeria Kitchen & Wine
We escaped from the cold (we were particularly cold after our swim) and enjoyed a carby feast at Bokeria. The truffle pasta I ordered was so delicious. Would definitely go back.

Gelateria Emiliana (a 5* rated ice-cream shop) is right by this restaurant so definitely stop off for one as pudding!
Absolutely love Split and you’ll definitely have to stop here if you’re planning on island hopping, so take a night or two to explore if you have the time 🙂
